“3 Little Words Which Generated $$$ Millions in Sales”
August 3, 2008
When you know the formula like I do - which took just 3 words to generate millions of dollars in sales for one product - which is also the same formula which sells your products and or services - don’t you wish you could get your hands on it too.
Many times, getting more sales comes down to the law of averages.
To quote Sherlock Holmes:
“While individuals may be insoluble puzzles, in the aggregate they become mathematical certainties.”
THIS STATEMENT means you can never foretell how any one person will react to a given sentence, however you can say with scientific accuracy what the averages will do. This philosophy of Sherlock Holmes is the best defense for the underlying philosophy which single sentences can be so constructed as to make a majority of people buy.
Many decades ago manufacturers began to distribute square clothespins, instead of their famous round ones. Many people became curious and one man person in particular, Elmer Wheeler, who went into the first small store he came upon and asked the clerk what was the difference between square and the round clothespins.
“3 cents a dozen difference” was her reply.
There was concern and an assumption - being square and also dearer, the store would get stuck with the square clothespins.
MANY REASONS FOR BEING SQUARE
Elmer decided to go the the head office of the chain stores where he was told these were the ’sizzles’ in a square clothespin:
1. They won’t slip out of wet hands so easily.
2. You can hold more in your wet hands.
3. They are polished and won’t tear delicate garments.
4. They won’t split on clothe-lines.
5. They have knobs on the end so women can hold them
in their mouths, especially if they have no teeth.
Everything about these square clothespins were scientific - except what the salesperson said to their customers.
While hearing these ’sizzles’ - Wheeler accidentally dropped a clothespin onto the floor and a thought instantly came to him. He visualized a woman hanging up clothes. She had an armful of washing and clothespins in her wet hands and in her mouth as she started to cross the kitchen floor. Suddenly a clothespin falls to the floor.
Being round, it rolled under the stove. Now, it may also roll elsewhere and if the woman fails to see it, she can slip over - doing herself a nasty injury. Wheeler then thought to himself, perhaps women would buy the square clothespins - if they were told this simple ‘SIZZLE’.
A square clothespins won’t roll when it hits the floor; if a woman drops one, she only has to bend down, pick it up and go merrily on her work. She would know at all times where the square clothespins were and would not trip on them.
Taking this idea to his Tested Sentences laboratory, Elmer came up with this 2 second ‘Tested Selling Sentence’ and then instructed sales people to say, when women wanted to know why the clothespins were square:
“They Won’t Roll.”
These 3 little words struck home, selling millions and confirmed Sherlock Holmes theory on the law of averages.
Elmer Wheeler, in my view is a legend when it comes to advertising and phrasing your words and sentences which can ignite your sales. I invested in the rights to sell his ‘Tested Sentences’ Book after the mind blowing return on my nominal investment being 9,361%. - the very first time I had used it several years ago.
This gem took ten years to make with 105,000 tested words and phrases - tested on over 19 million plus people. I doubt even Donald Trump could afford such a study today.
I rate this ‘Rare Advertising Bible’ as one of my smartest decisions and I would have happily paid 100 times more for it.

We all should dig a little deeper for the right cliches that make our copy sizzle and snap. . . Are you using POWER WORDS?
I´ve got some good experience using magic words. But today, customers are bombarded by these words. There is a glut on the market with magical, power or what else words in my opinion.
